CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Percy Thomson Gallery, Stratford, with funding from Taranaki Foundation through the Taranaki Hauora Fund, is proud to host the fourth iteration of this Taranaki-based competition and exhibition for young emerging visual artists.

Eligibility

To enter, you must be one of the following criteria (AND/OR):

i)       Born in Taranaki

ii)      Live in Taranaki

iii)    Attended secondary school in Taranaki

You must also be aged 13 to 26 years on June 3, 2024, the date entries close. 

Acceptance of Terms

Each artist who submits a Work acknowledges and agrees that they are bound by these terms and conditions, in consideration for Percy Thomson Gallery providing the artist with the opportunity to submit a Work for potential selection and display in the Exhibition. 

For the avoidance of doubt, entry of Work into the Exhibition constitutes acceptance of these terms and conditions.

Terms and Conditions

1. No unauthorised use of any copyright images, photographs, text or other material will be accepted.  Where a recognisable image of a person is used in the Work that person’s consent must be obtained in writing.

2. Artwork for the Exhibition will be selected by Gallery Director Laura Campbell and three other community judges - Elliot Collins, Jennifer Halli and Dwayne Duthie. The Director’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

3. Artists acknowledge that:

a) They are responsible for depositing and collecting the Work from Percy Thomson Gallery.

b) They undertake to advise Percy Thomson Gallery of any defects in the Work upon deposit of the Work to the Gallery.         

c) Percy Thomson Gallery, at its cost, is responsible for taking all due care of the Work to provide reasonable protection against theft, loss or damage during the Loan Period.

d) Percy Thomson Gallery will acknowledge the Artist by way of a suitable wall label/text in the exhibition space.

e) The Work delivered to gallery must be in good condition and to a gallery standard for display.

4. If an artist is under 18 years of age, they acknowledge that they have their parent or guardian’s permission to submit the Work for consideration for the Exhibition and agree that if their Work is selected for the Exhibition that their parent or guardian may be required to sign acceptance of these terms and conditions prior to confirmation of their inclusion in the Exhibition.

5. ENTRY FORM

Only one entry per person. Please use the separate official entry form. Do NOT send original artwork with the entry form. Include digital copy or unmounted photograph or digital print of the artwork, maximum size A4, with the entry form. If you want this image returned to you, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with the entry. No entries will be accepted after the due date of June 3, 2024. A pre-selection of all submitted artwork will be made and the entrants will be advised by email by the following Friday. Entry forms and artwork may be emailed to director@percythomsongallery.org.nz. Subject Line: Emergence 2024.

There is no entry fee.

6. ARTWORK

a) Restrictions

i)  Work is invited in any medium or genre of visual art (except video). However, artwork must be suitable for freight, handling and exhibition.

ii) All 2D art must be ready to hang (or include materials and instructions for alternative mounting). Please ensure all works have suitable D-rings, string etc on the back. Please do not use single serrated hanging systems.

iii) Maximum size is 1.5 m (150 cm) in any direction: height, width and depth.

iv) Percy Thomson Gallery reserves the right to decline entries on the grounds of (1) health and safety risks of exhibiting, (2) expressions of prejudice or hatred towards any group or (3) obscenity.

v) Copyright: All works are to be original and the artist’s own. Percy Thomson Gallery retains the right to reproduce images of artwork for promotional purposes. There will be no entitlement to royalty or other payment for reproduction of images of the artwork.

b) Installation

Percy Thomson Gallery will cover reasonable costs for exhibition. The artist is responsible for any extraordinary costs for installation.

c) Promotion

The artist agrees that Percy Thomson Gallery may use his/her name and photograph for promotional purposes and consents to images of the Work being taken by the Percy Thomson Gallery, and for Percy Thomson Gallery to use the images for any and all of the following purposes: in connection with the promotional and advertising activities associated with the Exhibition; to be reproduced on the Percy Thomson website, Facebook and in all other media promoting the Exhibition; to be retained in perpetuity in Percy Thomson Gallery’s archives.

7. PRIZE MONEY

a) The First Prize for the winner of the supreme TARANAKI FOUNDATION EMERGENCE AWARD FOR YOUNG ARTISTS is $2000 (inclusive of any taxes). Winner will also be invited to create a solo exhibition at Percy Thomson Gallery for the next Emergence Awards in 2026 (no hire fee applied); Second prize of $1000; Third prize of $750. Highly Commended, 2x $500.

b) There are four prizes each to the value of $500 for photography, 2D Art (e.g. Painting, collage, graphic design), 3D art (ceramic, textile, freestanding sculpture) and Māori Art. No digital video artwork will be accepted. Printed still shots of a film will be accepted.

c) Three Taranaki Secondary School prizes – 1st $750, 2nd $500 and 3rd $250. Merit Awards, 2x $100.

d) People's Choice Award. The winner will receive $500.

e) 4x Special prizes will be awarded and vary from $300 - $500.

8. JUDGING

Artwork for the Exhibition will be chosen by the Gallery Director and two other community artists.  The selectors’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The artists will be informed about the selection no later than June 7, 2024.

Two judges will select award winners in each category. Their decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.

The award winners will be announced at a special preview award function on Friday 28 June at 6pm (Matariki Holiday). This event will be subject to discretion of the Gallery Director and Taranaki Foundation.

9. SALE OF WORKS

Work does not have to be offered for sale. If you wish to offer your Work for sale please indicate price on the entry form. The Gallery will not take commission on sales. There will be no sales prior to opening night. Percy Thomson Gallery will handle all sales during the exhibition and will pay artists the after the exhibition is over. You will nominate a bank account for the sales to paid into.

All sold works will stay on display until the exhibition closes.

10. INSURANCE

All work will be covered by insurance whilst in the Gallery, but you will have to insure your Work during transit to and from the Gallery. The gallery will not cover any damage incurred from a courier delivery to/or from the gallery.

11. DELIVERY OF ARTWORK FOR EXHIBITION

a) If your Work is selected for the exhibition, it must be delivered to the Gallery at these times:

From Monday 17th to 21st June (Gallery is open each day 10:00 – 4:00pm)

Saturday 22 June 10:00am-3:00pm

Sunday 23 June 10:00am-3:00pm (final day to deliver Work)

Works delivered later than these dates and times will not be accepted.

The acceptance email letter from Percy Thomson Gallery will include any other instructions for delivery.

b) Packaging

All works must be securely packaged in reusable packing materials, suitable for the return of work to the artist. All packaging must be labelled with artist’s name.

c) Freight

All freight costs and safety of delivery of artworks to and from Percy Thomson Gallery will be the sole responsibility of the artist. If you use a courier, you must include return courier tickets with the packaging.

KEY DATES 

By Monday 3 June, 5PM:  Entry form and hi -resolution image due to Percy Thomson Gallery.

Friday 7 June: Percy Thomson Gallery informs artists of selection and delivery instructions.

From Monday 17th to 21st June (Gallery is open each day 10:00 – 4:00pm)

Saturday 22 June 10:00am-3:00pm

Sunday 23 June 10:00am-3:00pm (final day to deliver Work)

Friday 28 June at 6pm: Opening event and awards presentation at Percy Thomson Gallery. People’s Choice Award will be announced after the exhibition closes and announcement made on Facebook/Instagram and Website.

Sunday 21 July: Exhibition closes.

Sunday 21 July: 3 – 5pm: ALL artists pick up Work.

Friday 10 August: Payment for any sold Works or Prizes sent to artists by this date.
